The 30th edition of the international contemporary art fair ARCOmadrid_2011 has opened its doors today February 16 to art professionals, art collectors and to the press.Tomorow will take place the official inauguration of its 30th anniversary, in the pavillions 8 and 10 of the Feria de Madrid (12h00pm-14h00pm). The ceremony will be presided by the Princes of Astúrias.
ARCOmadrid_2011 will open to the public on Friday 18th and will close on Sunday 20th.
This year's edition counts with 197 galleries from 26 countries and as usual will offers its visitors and participants a vast array of events, including panel discussions, presentation of new art projects, attribution of prizes and other relevant activities.
Among its vast programme, ARCO will include a contemporary art auction organized by a non govermental organization, Solidarid Internacional, in collaboration with La Casa Encendida, which proceeds will benefit the development of projects in Haiti.
One of the traditions of the fair is to recognize the effort of art collectors through the attribution of prizes, a procedure that has been happening during the last 15 years.This year the collections of Isak Andic, BESart and The Cultural Foundation “EKATERINA”, will be respectively awarded in the categories of private collection, corporate collection and international collection.For the first time a in Memorian prize will be attributed to the art collector António Fernandéz Villalba, recently deceased.
Coinciding with the Year of Spain in Russia and the Year of Russia in Spain, Russia is the invited country with several exhibitions and activities focusing of the country's happening art taking place at the fair and outside, namely in La Casa Encendida, Matadero de Madrid and Círculo de Bellas Artes.
The organizer of ARCO, IFEMA Feria de Madrid, wants to keep up with the new technologies and ARCOmadrid_2011 will offer free applications for the iPad, iPhone and Android platforms.
