New Postgraduate Program at European School of Visual Arts (EESI)‏

Since Documenta X (1997), under the direction of Catherine David, that documentary has conquered its place in the field of contemporary art.
This is put in evidence by the inclusion of documentaries at contemporary art festivals and how they can complement each other, offering a more comprising perception.

This postgraduate program is conceived for students in art or cinema, young exhibition curators or art critics who wish to extend their training through a year of experimentation around the interplay of issues between document and contemporary art, without being confined to a single technique or material.

Its diversity allows it to cover areas such as: promoting a collective dimension to work, following through production, producing materials (films, texts, exhibitions, performances), carrying out work on theory and art history, calling for modes of exhibiting, encouraging experimentation, analizing documentary protocol and the issue of archiving, blending knowhow and practice, and drawing on the European dimension by looking at the problems of translation.

The year will conclude with an event: a cycle of projections, exhibition, publication, seminar, conference and meetings whose form will be decided on by each group. An annual publication will expose the activities of the postgraduate program, gathering the artits' works and the contributions of the guest artists.

With the aim of establishing the work of the postgraduates in the fields of art and research, and supporting their work in terms of production, the postgraduate Program "Document and contemporary art" is associated with Le Confort Moderne, concert hall and exhibition center, based in Poitiers. It benefits from the dynamic of exchanges between an art center and an art school. A partnership between CalArts, California Institute of the Arts, Valencia (California) has also been renewed. This postgraduate program is also associated with l'École nationale supérieure d'art de Bourges (France).

The postgraduate students will have use of the school’s technical facilities and a grant of 4000 Euros. The group will be composed of four young artists.
The artists, critics, exhibition curators, and producers linked to the postgraduate diploma projects or artistic affairs, will be present throughout the year.
Two artists will regularly attend and meet the postgraduate students to support their work. Staff from the European School for Visual Arts will also assist the postgraduates in their studies. A seminar will be organized at the end of the year to review the methods applied in the course of the diploma and in artistic research.

Candidates to the Postgraduate Program must hold a recognized diploma, equivalent to level 1 (High School graduation certificates + 5 years of study in higher education) from a national or international institution. After a preliminary selection from the candidate’s artistic dossier, application letter and curriculum vitae, the candidate will be invited to be interviewed by a panel of experts.
The artistic dossier/portfolio should include documentation of the work produced by the candidate (texts, photographs, films, catalogues and articles). For cinematic or audio works, the candidate should select extracts with a maximum of 12 minutes.
The application letter (maximum length 2 pages) must outline the candidate’s career, previous experience and fields of interest for the postgraduate diploma program.

Submission deadline for artistic dossier and application letter is 10th September 2011. The interview will be held on 23th September.

The application must be sent to:

Artist Lucian Freud dies at 88 years of age

Born in Berlin on 8 December 1922, the British painter Lucian Freud passed away at the age of 88 this Wednesday night, July 20, due to unspecified illness at his home in London.

The artist, known chiefly for his painstakingly created and stylized impasted portrait and figure paintings, was the son of Austrian Jewish father, Ernst Ludwig Freud, an architect, and a German Jewish mother, Lucie née Brasch.
He was a grandson of Sigmund Freud.

To escape the rize of Nazism, Lucian fled with his family to London in 1933 and became a British citizen in 1939.
During his early artistic studies, he briefly fequented the Central School of Art in London. Then, with greater success, he studied at the Cedric Morris' East Anglian School of Painting and Drawing in Dedham, relocated in 1940 at Benton End near Hadleigh.
In the years of 1942-43, Lucian attended Goldsmiths, University of London.
Commissioned by the Ceylonese editor Tambimuttu, he illustrated a book of poems by Nicholas Moore entitled "The Glass Tower" in 1943.

Lucian Freud had his first solo exhibition in 1944 at the Alex Reid & Lefevre Gallery, entitled "The Painter's Room", where two of his drawings, a stuffed zebra (-cum-unicorn) and a palm tree, used to illustrate Moore's book, reappear.

In his 20's he would apply thin layers of paint to depict people, plants and animals in unusual juxtapositions.
But in the mid-1950's he began to work in portraiture, where nudes would become an almost exclusive subject. It's in this phase that he starts using coarse hog hair and applying looser strokes within an impasto technique that would make his paintings doubtless recognizable.
His first nude was painted in 1966.

Freud's subjects were often the people in his life; friends, family, fellow painters (these included Francis Bacon and David Hockney), lovers, children.
In the 1970s Freud spent 4,000 hours on a series of paintings of his mother.
The artist would often take hundreds of hours to complete his paintings and since he preferred to paint from life, sittings would generally last quite long.

One of the foremost figurative artists of his generation and widely considered the pre-eminent British artist of his time, his art gained a well deserved recognition.
Some of his most well-known paintings include: Interior in Paddington (1951), Girl With a White Dog (1951–52), Naked Girl Asleep II (1968), Naked Man With Rat (1977–78), Reflection (self-portrait) (1985).

In May 2008, his 1995 portrait "Benefits Supervisor Sleeping", depicting a naked portrait of Sue Tilley lying on a sofa, was sold at auction by Christie's in New York City for $33.6 million, setting a world record for sale value of a painting by a living artist.

A retrospective of his work was recently exhibited at the Centre Georges Pompidou in Paris under the title "L'Atelier."

His work is represented by Acquavella Galleries.

"I want paint to work as flesh," he told his biographer, Lawrence Gowing, in 1982. "As far as I am concerned the paint is the person. I want it to work for me as flesh does."

Phaidon Press presents "Carl Andre: Things in Their Elements" by Alistair Rider

Phaidon Press has launched an enlightening monograph offering a comprehensive and insightful look at the career of groundbreaking American minimalist sculptor Carl Andre.

With unique access to Andre’s studio and personal archives, its author, academic and Carl Andre expert Alistair Rider, examines Andre’s role as a sculptor and installation artist.
The book "Carl Andre: Things in Their Elements" includes never before published sketches and writings, many contemporary installation photographs, and works in private collections and those in major international museums.

Rider also presents the artist's rarely seen poetry and photography that form an integral part of his oeuvre.
Andre's concrete poetry has exhibited in the United States and Europe, part of which is in the collection of the Stedelijk Museum in Amsterdam.

Born in Quincy, MA, on September 16, 1935, Carl Andre studied art at Phillips Academy in Andover, MA. There he became friends with Hollis Frampton who later introduced him to Constantin Brâncuşi.
From 1958 to 1960, Andre shared a studio with former classmate from Phillips Academy, Frank Stella.
Although his early work in wood may have been inspired by Brâncuşi, his conversations with Stella about space and form led him in a different direction.

Recognized both for his ordered linear format and floor-based grid-like formations of breeze blocks, Carl Andre makes his first public debut in 1965, in ‘Shape and Structure’ curated by Henry Geldzahler at the Tibor de Nagy Gallery.
The following year, New York’s Jewish Museum included his controversial LEVER in its important exhibition ‘Primary Structures’.

In 1969 Andre helped organize the Art Workers Coalition.
His first solo show takes place at the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum in 1970.
Carl Andre lives and works in New York, and his work features in leading collections worldwide.

Alistair Rider is a Lecturer in Art History at the University of St Andrews. He teaches classes on modern sculpture, critical theory, New York modernism and experimental art of the 1960s.

Curatorial Studies Residency at Node Center Berlin

The Node Center Berlin, has announced The Curatorial Studies Residency Program for 2011, designed for emerging curators who may wish to expand their professional practice in Berlin.

Under the theme “The logic of the limit: transversal curatorial processes”, residents will develop specific theoretical-practical research, exploring curatorial practices that expand their own mechanisms beyond the normal “taxonomic” processes of the art exhibition (i.e., classification, study, and exhibition), generating new discursive possibilities.
Students are expected to take an active role in organizing the program (i.e., managing seminars, workshops, guest lectures, exhibitions, etc.).

Perceiving curatorship as exhibition praxis, this intensive twelve weeklong program will offer direct experimentation with the exhibition methods and processes, and will be complemented with activities such as workshops, seminars, meetings with cultural agents, art shows, and visits to exhibition spaces.

Applicants must hold an academic background in any of the following areas of contemporary art: curatorial studies, theory and philosophy of art, art history, art management, and/or art production; visual arts, fine arts, arts and new media; or equivalent work experience within an Institution, or with projects developed as an independent curator.

The application form must be submited by July 20th 2011, after which an online interview will take place with each applicant.
Tuition fees are as follow: one deposit of €670 by August 16th, and three monthly payments of €750.

Rembrandt and his Circle. Master drawings from the Frits Lugt Collection

The Dutch cultural centre Institut Néerlandais, Paris, has put together nearly one hundred of the finest drawings by Rembrandt and his circle from the famous Frits Lugt Collection.

"Rembrandt and his circle" exhibition shows twenty drawings by Rembrandt and a selection of the best work from his pupils and contemporaries, including Ferdinand Bol, Govert Flinck, Lambert Doomer and Nicolaes Maes.

The drawings are shown in frames which range from the sixteenth to the nineteenth century from the Netherlands but, France, Italy, Spain and Germany, which have been recently restored especially for this occasion. Oak, walnut, poplar, ebony, pear, tortoise-shell and gold leaves are among the used framing materials.

Rembrandt Harmenszoon van Rijn (1606 -1669) produced a considerable number of drawings with a great variety of subjects and techniques.
He would lodge his apprentices in his studio, where he taught numerous students.
These students had usually began their studies under the instruction of other artists before they came to Rembrandt, namely Carel Fabritius, Ferdinand Bol, Gerbrand van den Eeckhout, Samuel van Hoogstraten and Willem Drost.

Managed by the Fondation Custodia, a partner of the Institut Néerlandais in Paris, the private collection of Frederik (Frits) Johannes Lugt (1884-1970) is regarded as one of the twentieth century’s greatest private collections of Rembrandt drawings and etchings, together with a coherent collection of works by artists in Rembrandt’s circle, including pupils and followers.

Lugt's collection includes finished works as well as sketches in black chalk and sanguine, some of them connected to paintings, many of them produced as exercises or for personal pleasure, and others likely to have been used as models for Rembrandt’s pupils. Pen and ink, washes, brown ink, sanguine, black chalk and gouache were some of the mediums used by Rembrandt.

Peter Schatborn, former head of the Rijksprentenkabinet, the national print room
at the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam, and expert on 17th century drawings, in particular by Rembrandt, spent these last ten years studying the Frits Lugt’s collection of drawings by Rembrandt and his circle.
This exaustive research led to new attributions; thus twenty-five of
the drawings changed authors, some of whom had not yet been represented in the collection.

Schatborn's annotations have been recently published in the catalogue raisonné of the Frits Lugt Collection and this exhibition acknowledges his work by presenting and explaining them to the public in an exhibition room focused on this thorough research.
A free of charge lecture by Peter Schatborn will take place Tuesday 13 September 2011 at 7 pm (reservation is required).

The "Rembrandt and his Circle" exhibition (Rembrandt et son Cercle) can be visited until the 2nd of October 2011 at the Institute Néerlandais, 121 rue de Lille, Paris.

Who was Raymond Savignac ?

Born in Paris, on the 6th of November 1907, Raymond Savignac was a French graphic artist famous for his commercial posters.

His work was distinguished by its efficient simplicity combined with a touch of humour.

Self-taught, Savignac starts his illustrating career in 1935 at L'Alliance Graphique under the instruction of Cassandre. However it's only in the year of 1949 that his work starts gaining recognition thanks to a successful commercial campaign for the "Monsavon au lait."
His posters featured world-known brands such as Air France, Air-Wick, Aspro, Bic, Cinzano, Gitanes, Hennessy, Maggi, Perrier, Renault and Yoplait.

Savignac also design the posters for Yves Robert's film "La guerre des boutons" from 1962 (filmed in 1961), based on a 1912 French novel by Louis Pergaud (an irish version was brought to screen in 1994, directed by John Roberts), "Bébert et l'omnibus" by Yves Robert, and "Lancelot du lac" by Robert Bresson.

He retired to Trouville-sur-Mer (Calvados) in 1979, where he would stay for the rest of his life until October 31, 2002.

The works of Raymond Sauvignac can be found in a dedicated room at the Musée de Trouville - Villa Montebello, where one can also watch a 24mm film where the artist describes the creation process of a poster.
