Visit Art Basel 2013 During The Weekend

 If you are in Switzerland or nearby, why not reserve some of your time this weekend and visit one of the most renowned art fairs in the world?

 The 2013 edition of Art Basel, puts the public in direct contact with Modern and Contemporary art, ranging from the great masters of the 20th century to 21st century artworks, including the latest generation of emerging arists. All represented by 230 of the world's leading galleries.

 With more than 4000 artists represented, most of the artistic medium are represented at the fair, including paintings, sculpture, installations, videos, multiples, prints, photography, and performance.
Art Basel 2013 offers eight sectors that complement each other and enrich the visitor's experience.

Curated projects include solo presentations, juxtapositions, or thematic exhibits.
Each year, two outstanding young emerging artists from the statements sector, are awarded with the Baloise Art Prize. These solo projects are acquired by the Baloise Group, which are then donated to renowned European art institutions.

 Unlimited is an exhibition platform dedicated to projects that transcend the physical limitations of a common art-show stand. Large-scale installations, out-sized sculptures and paintings, video projections and live performances, are some of the innovative works exhibited on this platform. Unlimited is curated by New York-based curator Gianni Jetzer.


 Berlin film scholar Marc Glöde and Zurich collector This Brunner, are the curators of the film section,  a week-long programme dedicated to films by and about artists.

 Enhancing the experience beyond Basel's headquarters, Parcours engages the public with interventions and performances by renowned international artists and emerging talents, as well with site-specific sculptures.
This section is curated by Florence Derieux and is open to the public.

 Visitors can acess some of the most prominent art publications from around the world.
Editors and publishers are often present  and many magazines contribute with presentations to the Salon series, including lectures and panel discussions.

 Beyond these sectors, Art Basel offers a full programme of events that include symposiums and artist talks.
The morning Conversation series, enables the audience to access to an insider's point of view, while Dynamic dialogues take place between prominent members of the artworld, each sharing their unique perspective on producing, exhibiting and collecting art. Conversations is presented in collaboration with the Absolut Art Bureau.

 A mobile app is available for Art Basel, providing essential information as well as an interactive 3D-map and events listing.

Frieze New York 2013 - Contemporary Art Fair

 

Designed by SO – IL architects and sponsored by Deutsche Bank, the second edition of Frieze New York, contemporary art fair, is being held at New York’s Randall’s Island Park until tomorow May 13, 2013.

 Realized annually at Frieze New York and curated by Cecilia Alemani, this year's Frieze Projects program includes seven specially commissioned projects, for which five participating artists were invited to conceive site-specific works that either react to the exceptional location of Randall’s Island or engage with the experience of the fair.
The 2013 invited artists are: Andra Ursuta, Liz Glynn, Maria Loboda, Marianne Vitale and Mateo Tannatt.

 The program also features a special tribute to legendary artist-run restaurant FOOD, originally conceived by Gordon Matta-Clark and Carol Goodden in 1971. With a menu that changes daily, the artists chefs at FOOD 1971/2013 are: Matthew Day Jackson, Carol Goodden, Tina Girouard and Jonathan Horowitz.

 This year's Frieze Projects program includes a literary project entitled Frieze Story, this year with an original text by novelist Ben Marcus.
Interviews with all the commissioned artists, plus a special homage to FOOD as a continuing source of inspiration, appear in the Frieze New York Catalogue, which is available to purchase at the fair, and via frieze.com, and is priced: $39.95 / £24.95 / €30.77.

 Visitors to the Art Fair will have the chance to appreciate the work of sculptors from around the world, including Paul McCarthy’s Balloon Dog (2013), an 80-foot-high inflatable work.
Fiona Connor, Style Guide Spa (2013); Saint Clair Cemin, Fotini (2013); Martha Friedman, Amygdalas (2013); and Nick Van Woert, Primitive (2013) are also among the artists exhibiting at the Sculpture Park, located along the waterfront of Randall’s Island and overlooking the East River
Also on show will be works by artists: Tom Burr, Tom Friedman, Andreas Lolis, Charles Long, Jason Meadows, Pae White and Franz West. The Sculpture Park at Frieze New York is selected by curator Tom Eccles.

 Artists Charles Atlas and the New Humans, Trisha Baga and Haroon Mirza, were invited to create the three commissioned audio works for the second edition of Frieze Sounds, programmed and curated by Cecilia Alemani and presented with BMW. The sound works will be premiered in the BMW 7 Series cars that operate the VIP shuttle services from Randall’s Island.
Additionally, the works will be accessible at friezenewyork.com, available to download since May 10, 2013, and at a listening station within the fair.

 Frieze Talks is a daily program of presentations, panel discussions and conversations with leading artists, writers and cultural commentators. Frieze Talks 2013 is programmed by editors of frieze Dan Fox (Co-Editor) and Sam Thorne (Associate Editor).
This year’s participants include: Douglas Crimp, Lydia Davis, Joan Jonas and John Maus.

 Because education is an important part of our lives, this 2013 edition includes the Frieze New York Education, a space that enables public school classes and museum groups to further explore the fair through workshops.

 Gary Hattem, President of the Deutsche Bank Americas Foundation, said of the Education program: ‘This new educational component is a chance for children to interact with art from around the world in their own backyard.’

 The 2013 edition of Frieze New York includes a selection of over 180 of the world’s leading contemporary art galleries. A strong contingent of US galleries is particularly in evidence, with 55 participating galleries from the fair’s host city. Galleries from the following 32 countries will show at Frieze New York 2013: Argentina, Australia, Austria, Belgium, Brazil, Canada, China, Colombia, Denmark, France, Germany, Greece, India, Ireland, Israel, Italy, Japan, Korea, Lebanon, New Zealand, Norway, Poland, Romania, Russia, South Africa, Spain, Switzerland, The Netherlands, Turkey, UAE, UK and USA.

 Emerging galleries will be participating in the Focus and Frame sections of the fair. Focus is for galleries less than ten years old debuting works previously unseen in an art-fair context.
Focus galleries will show curated projects or solo stands conceived for Frieze New York. Frame is a section dedicated to galleries established less than six years ago and, this year, is supported by Joe Fresh. The Frame galleries selection is made on the basis of a proposed solo presentation and has been advised by curators Rodrigo Moura and Tim Saltarelli.

 A Stand Prize in the value of $15,000, was presented on Thursday 9 May to the most innovative gallery stand at the fair. The award was sponsored by Champagne Pommery and judged by an international panel of curators: Juan A. Gaitán (Curator 8th Berlin Biennale); Naomi Beckwith (Marilyn and Larry Fields Curator, MCA Chicago); Jeffrey Grove (The Hoffman Family Senior Curator of Contemporary Art, Dallas Museum of Art).

Salon International 2013 - A Juried Exhibition of Oil and Acrylic Paintings

 Submissions are open for the Salon International 2013 juried exhibition, a project of the International Museum of Contemporary Masters, hosted by Greenhouse Gallery of Fine Art in San Antonio, Texas.

 Entrants can send digital files of their work(s) according to instructions in the prospectus until January 18, 2013. Slide entries must arrive at the gallery until the mentioned deadline. Entry fees apply. The submited work must be original (oil or acrylic) and completed after pril 13, 2011. Each artist can submit up to three entries.

 The submited entries will be juried by Jim Janes and Mark Smith, owners of Greenhouse Gallery of Fine Art.
Renowned artist Daniel E. Greene, N.A. will be the 2013 edition's awarding judge.

 The selected paintings for the exhibition must be framed, ready to hang and priced according to the prospectus. Please note that entrants are responsible for the shipping of the works (including return), insurance through shipping and during the exhibition (April 13 - May 3).

 Shipped paintings must arrive at the gallery between March 12-30, 2013. Shipments from outside the United States must be shipped "Free Domicile" (DDP or Delivered Duty Paid) or will not be accepted.

 Artists whose works are selected for the exhibition and are able to deliver their paintings uncrated and personally at the Greenhouse Gallery of Fine Art (on March 30, 2013, between the hours of 10am and 6pm), will have to include a check of $10 for each painting, payable to Greenhouse Gallery for handling fees.


 Those who cannot take their works in person, will have to include a $20 check for each painting payable to Greenhouse Gallery to cover the labor expense for uncrating, storage of crates, re-crating your painting and contacting a shipper for return. In a separate check, include a check made out to Greenhouse Gallery to cover the cost of return shipping unless you provide your billing account number with a shipping company. Both checks should be in an envelope inside the crate with your painting.

 Approximatey 300 paintings will be juried into the Salon International 2013 exhibition, wich includes over $35,000 awards in cash, merchandise certificates and advertising in renowned art magazines.
The Best of Show will get a $8,000 cash award and an article in American Art Collector.

 The Art Inquirer advises its readers to carefully read the rules outlined in the prospectus and revise all steps more than once, eventually taking notes of the most important aspects, namely fees, shipping, gallery commissions and how the payment will be made to the artists concerning the sold works.

 Again remember that the entry deadline for digital entries is January 18, 2013 and that slide entries must arrive to the gallery until this date.

When Selling Online is Not an Option For an Artist

 In the recent years, internet assumed an almost indespensable role in the artist's life.
From exposure to selling, internet allows artists to show their work to a worldwide audience, something that years ago was only accessible to renowned ones. This fact has been mostly welcomed by young and emerging artists who strive with great difficulty to get there work into a gallery.

 But together with the swift expansion of the internet, arrived a large number of artists with their own websites, either developed by themselves or recurring to web services that aggregate  websites for artists in a common platform.
The task of getting one's work noticeable among all these websites has become a time consuming task that often takes artists from their creative process. Selling or being represented by a brick and mortar gallery is therefore a serious objective to be considered.

 Many artists sell their art through several venues, including online, at their studio or through galleries.
We are not here to discuss which venue is better. Each artist will have to discover that throughout his/her career. However it's hardly arguable that being represented by a gallery is in the plans of most artists and is seen as a top achievement in one's artistic career, besides getting into a museum but that's another story.

 Working with a good gallery also enables artists to concentrate on their art and artistic development, while the gallery makes its best to promote their work. It's a common interest afterall.

 Although many galleries will have no problems with their artists selling online or on their own (as long as they observe certain rules), there are those that will work solely with artists who only sell through galleries, be it with an exclusivity contract or not. This will depend on several factors, including territorial boundaries that can go from a small town to a country or even worldwide.

 The Art Inquirer contacted with a representative of a well-established gallery that does not represent artists who sell online or at their studi. However most of them have their art available for viewing online, which is good for gaining exposure for their work and for the gallery that represents them.

 In his own words, he explains the reasons for this fact:

«We believe artists should have and maintain their own web presence and we have no problem with those who choose to represent and sell their own work. We just aren't going to represent those who do. The main reason we take the stand we do is in order to clearly define and establish the integritiy of that aritst's market.

It is not beneficial for us as a gallery to be in direct competition with the artists's whose careers we are trying to advance. This is harmful for the legitimate establishment of the artist's retail market not to mention the eventual tarnishing of the reputation of the artist as well as undermining of the gallery.

This relationship allows the artist to concentrate on being an artist and allows the gallery to focus on being a retail market.»

«We represent artists who have websites. We just don't represent artists who sell their work directly to the public. In fact most of our artists have their own website, however, we (or their other galleries) handle their sales and when collectors try to sidestep the galleries the artists refer the collectors back to the galleries.»

VIP Art Fair 2012: VIP 2.0 Contemporary Art

The second edition of VIP Art Fair is taking place between February 3 (8h00 AM Est) and February 8 (11:59 PM Est).

After a first start in 2011 that wasn't free of some glitches, the new VIP 2.0 Contemporary Art gathers again some of the most prominent art galleries in the world, including: Alexander and Bonin, James Cohan, Stephen Friedman, Gagosian, Hauser & Wirth, Max Hetzler and David Zwirner.

This virtual gallery project enables art lovers and collectors to directly engage with brick and mortar galleries worldwide and view the works of some of the most famous artists, as well as those of emerging ones who's work has been selected by experts.

Other events are already programmed for the course of 2012.

Arte Lisboa 2011 - Contemporary Art Fair

Now in its 11th edition and back again to the Pavilion 1 of the International Fair of Lisbon, Arte Lisboa will have its preview & vernissage tomorow, 23th November, from 6 p.m. to 11 p.m.

This year's edition gathers 21 galleries from Portugal and 12 from Spain, with the objective of promoting the national and international contemporary art among the general public, with particular focus on potential buyers. It is also a meating between artists, gallerists, art critics and other people involved in the art business.

Included in the fair's programme and in partnership with "AntiFrame Independent Curating Project", a series of discussion panels will take place, where participating artists, gallerists, curators, museum directors, art collectors and other art related professionals, will discuss themes such as the relation between the artist, the gallerist, the curator and the collector, or the eventual need of emigrating for artists.

Kids will have their own space to express their creativity, thanks to an initiative by the Museu Colecção Berardo (Berardo Collection Museum) and Nintendo.

Arte Lisboa 2011, will open to the general public from 24th to 27th November (4 p.m. - 11 p.m.).

artbygenève 2011 at Palexpo, Geneva

Taking place at Palexpo, Geneva, the 2011 edition of artbygenève aims to provide an optimal public access and enjoyment, where exhibitors and public have the opportunity to establish relations in a relaxed and friendly atmosphere.

Galleries, artists and protagonists will be able to present themselves and their works to the general public and collectors in an efficient way, while visitors will be provided with specific and relevant information concerning the different trends and disciplines represented in order to help deciding which artworks to acquire.

Counting with 40 galleries, artbygenève will be presented in 4 sections:

artbygalleries: galleries selected for the quality of the artworks they highlight especially galleries that spot tomorrow’s talent.

artbyfoundation: a selection of artists and groups of artists presented by the Visual arts foundation.

artbymedia: special interest press, art publishers, bookstores, organizations.

artbymuseum: area devoted to foundations, museums and institutions.

For the first time at artbygenève, the Art and History Museum Library (Librairie du Musée d'Art et d'Histoire), located inside the Geneva Art and History Museum and founded by Luca Notari in 2002, will unveil a unique and ephemeral collection of more than 500 books, entirely dedicated to art.

Every day the library will organise an open to everyone event, where a meeting between an artist and an author will take place at tea-time (5 pm) in a friendly surrounding.
The presentations will be in French.

Regarded as an opportunity for everyone, especially for emerging artists and emerging art collectors, artbygenève 2011 will run from Friday 29 April through Tuesday 3 May (preview on 28 April) in the halls 4 and 5 of Palexpo-Geneva, at the same time as the 25th International Book and Press Fair: SILP, Geneva (25 Salon International du Livre et de la Presse, Genève).

Admission to the Fair will be free on Friday 29 April.

Nature et Idéal: le paysage à Rome, 1600 - 1650

From March 9 to June 6 2011, Les Galeries Nationales du Grand Palais (Clemenceau entrance), present the exhibition Nature and the ideal: landscape in Rome, 1600 - 1650 (Nature et idéal : le paysage à Rome, 1600 - 1650).

The exhibition focuses in the period of art history when landscape painting becames a theme on its own. Before a decorative element of Naturalism in Northern Europe, it's in the Rome of the first half of the 17th century that the theme assumes an important role, namely with the development of landscapes in the neo-Venitian style in Rome between 1620 and 1630; the popularity of the Bamboccianti's painted genre scenes; the success of topographic landscapes and architectural caprices; and finally the outstanding ability to capture light and atmospheric effects.

Renowned artists participate in cycles of paintings in the European courts while huge paintings commissioned for Buen Retiro palace in Madrid attest its prestige within the aristocratic collections.

More than eighty paintings and some thirty drawings from the Louvre and the Prado as well as many public and private collections, representative of the history of landscape painting in the first half of the 17th century, are shown in the "Nature and the ideal: landscape in Rome, 1600 - 1650" exhibition divided into five sections: I - Annibale Carracci, Paul Bril and Adam Elsheimer in Rome; II – Changes in Bolognese landscapes: the presence of classical culture; III – Changes in Northern landscapes: the diversification of Flemish culture and types of landscape; IV – The early years of Claude Lorrain and Nicolas Poussin; V – The great landscapes of Claude Lorrain and Nicolas Poussin.

Between the names present in the exhibition are those of Annibale Carracci, Adam Elsheimer, Pieter Paul Rubens, Diego Velázquez, Paul Bril, Claude Lorrain, Domenico Zampieri, Jean Lemaire, Nicolas Poussin, Gaspard Dughet, Francesco Albani and Giovanni Lanfranco.

The exhibition is organised by the Réunion des Musées Nationaux, the Musée du Louvre and the Museo Nacional del Prado (where it will be show from 28 June to 25 September 2011).

Stéphane Loire, chief curator of the Painting department of the Musée du Louvre is the responsible for the curatorship at Les Galeries Nationales du Grand Palais, while the exhibition in Madrid will be curated by Andrés Ubeda de los Cobos, chief curator of Italian and French painting at the Museo Nacional del Prado.

Francesca Cappelletti, art historian professor in the Università degli Studi di Ferrara, Patrizia Cavazzini, Research fellow in The British School at Rome and Silvia Ginzburg, associated art historian professor in the Università di Roma Tre are the scientific curators.

Marc Vallet is responsible for the exhibition's design.

"Nature et idéal : le paysage à Rome, 1600 - 1650" can be visited every day, except Tuesdays, from 10a.m. to 8 p.m., late night on Wednesdays until 10 p.m. between March 9th and June 6th, 2011. It will be closed on May 1st.

Pablo Picasso's "Nude, Green Leaves and Bust" at the Tate Modern

The oil painting "Nude, Green Leaves and Bust" (Nu au Plateau de Sculpteur), created by Pablo Picasso in 1932, is on display since this Monday in the new Pablo Picasso room at the Tate Modern, London.

Depicting a sideface of the artist on a pedestal observing the naked figure of Marie-Thérèse Walter, and previously acquired in 1951 by the millionaire constructor and modern art lover Sydney F. Brody and included in Mrs. Brody collection, the painting was sold at Christies New York on May 4, 2010 for $106,4 million ($95 million without commissions and taxes) to an anonymous buyer, setting a new world record for a work of art sold at auction, a record still unsurpassed at this time.

This is the first time that "Nude, Green Leaves and Bust" is presented to the British public, thanks to the generosity of the anonymous lender.

VIP Art Fair - Exclusively Online

In recent years the art market witnessed the emerge of online venues with the purpose of permiting new artists to show and sell their works without passing through the traditional galleries.
Now a project catered for the major traditional galleries has been created, which will allow them to show their artworks online and fully interact with the public and especially with art collectors.

Conceived by James Cohan, active in the contemporary art world for more than 25 years as a dealer and founder of the James Cohan Gallery in New York in 1999, between other activities, the VIP Art Fair will, in similarity to its traditional counterparts, be open during one week, with the main difference of happening exclusively online and permiting less expenses to exhibitors and visitors.

Specially-created Private Rooms will permit dealers to share works from their gallery's backroom inventory (between 40 and 70 works) in real time with their clients.
Online payments will not be offered through this platform during this art fair.

The VIP Art Fair can be explored through different perspectives, including the obvious online tours, which can be based on featured works, tours created by collectors, critics, or even by curators from participating museums. Visitors will be able to build their own personalized tours of the Fair that showcase their favourite works and share with friends or post them in the VIP Lounge. Other ways to navigate the site wil include the Fair Map and advanced searches based on criteria of interest, such as artist’s name, medium, or price range.

With the title “Colectiva de Artistas da Galeria”, the exhibition shows the works of Ângelo de Sousa, João Queiroz, José de Guimarães, Paulo Nozolino, Pedro Tropa and Thierry Simões.

National Gallery of Scotland: The Young Vermeer

The National Gallery of Scotland presents "The Young Vermeer" exhibition, inaugurated this December 8th, 2010.

Displaying three paintings of the thirty six known ones by Johannes Vermeer, this exhibition is a must see for any art lover.

Vermeer is considered one of the world's greatest painters, and particularly renowned for his masterly treatment of light .

"Diana and her Nymphs" (about 1653-54) from the Royal Picture Gallery Mauritshuis in The Hague; "Christ in the House of Martha and Mary" (about 1654-55) from the National Galleries of Scotland; and "The Procuress" (1656) from the Gemäldegalerie Alte Meister Dresden, are the three paintings that can be seen at the exhibition.

During his lifetime Vermeer was known only to a small circle of devotees and never attained the same level of fame as other Dutch artists such as Pieter Bruegel the Elder ,Rembrandt or Gerrit Dou, with some of his paintings being misattributed to artists with greater reputations.

It was only in 1859 that the French connoisseur Étienne Thoré-Bürger discovered the signature on ‘The Procuress' in Dresden and identified it as the earliest work of Vermeer then known.

In 1901 the London dealer Forbes & Paterson offered for sale Christ in the House of Martha and Mary, attributed to Vermeer after his signature was discovered at the lower left on the side of the foot-stool. This discovery also finally confirmed Vermeer's long disputed authorship of the Diana and her Nymphs.

Open to the public until the 13th of March 2011, The Young Vermeer exhibition is admission free, therefore there are no excuses to miss it, especially for the readers of this blog who were informed last February.

Johannes, Jan or Johan Vermeer was baptized in Delft on 31 October 1632 as Joannis, and buried in the same city under the name Jan on 15 December 1675.

Art Basel Miami Beach 2010

Between the 2nd and the 5th of December (media reception is on the 1st) at the Miami Beach Convention Center, takes place the 2010 edition of the Art Basel Miami Beach, the sister event of Switzerland's Art Basel and considered the most important art show in the United States.

Art Basel Miami Beach will host more than 250 galleries from around the world, including some of the most famous ones, showing 20th and 21st century artworks by over 2000 international artists, from emerging to renowned ones.

The art fair will also include special exhibition sections and events featuring young galleries, performance art, public art projects and video art.

Parties and crossover events featuring music, film, architecture and design, will also be part of the programme.

Exhibition sites will be located in Miami's Art Deco District.

Other worth visiting events include the top-quality exhibitions in the museums of South Florida and special programmes for art collectors and curators.

The Art Basel Miami Beach 2010 edition is an opportunity for art lovers to keep up to date with the lastest trends of the art world, namely how artists are embracing the new technologies, and to meet them personally, which is always a rewarding experience.

Applications Open for Director at Artspace (Auckland, New Zealand)

With 23 years of existance, Artspace is a leading contemporary art project that usually presents eight exhibitions every year, as well as performances and public programmes.
Recent exhibitions and projects has featured works by Ann Veronica Janssens, Beatriz Santiago Muñoz, Dan Arps, Daniel Knorr, Francis Alÿs, Harun Farocki, Kate Newby, Kim Beom, Koki Tanaka, Layla Rudneva-Mackay, Liam Gillick, Rirkrit Tiravanija, Sean Kerr, Superflex, Shigeyuki Kihara and Tehching Hsieh.

During its history, seven directors have shared their experience and perspective on contemporary art, contributing to the continuous development of this project.

Now Artspace is seeking for a new Director for a three year period starting on April 2011.
With required experience as a curator or initiator of art projects, the successful applicant will own an in-depth knowledge of contemporary practice, strong networks and sector support, good editorial skills, and preferably will hold a post-graduate qualification in a relevant field.

The Director oversees a small team of staff and volunteers, and establishes parterships with cultural and funding agencies, actively encouraging and contributing to the development of the gallery through patronage contacts and public initiatives.
A strategic plan is set by the Board of Trustees, to whom the Director reports.

Arte Lisboa 2010 - Contemporary Art Fair

The 10th edition of Arte Lisboa 2010 - Contemporary Art Fair will take place between the 24th and the 28th of November, 2010.

Due to the fact that the NATO summit will be hosted at the International Fair of Lisbon (FIL) facilities during November, this year's event will be shown to the public in the River Pavillion of the Lisbon Congress Center(Pavilhão Rio do Centro de Congressos de Lisboa) located in the Industries Square (Praça das Indústrias)

Projected by the architect Keil do Amaral and inaugurated in 1957, the building has 3800 sqm of open space without any columns, featuring a system of natural light which can be opted out through a blackout system if so desired.

As the only contemporary art fair at national level, Arte Lisboa 2010 will present to the public a selection of 45 galleries (41 in the general programme) showing the work of emerging and seasoned artists in the national market and abroad.

The fair will also include a selection of works from EDP Energias de Portugal Collection and from Fundação PLMJ Video Collection.

Art Collectors, curators and international art critics are guests to the event, which organized with other partners aims to promote the aquisition of the exhibited artworks and provide visits to the city, including to studios and art centers.

Visitors will have the opportunity to attend and interact in discussion panels with the participation of artists, galerists, museum directors, collectors, art critics and other relevant personalities of the art world.

Curated by Filipa Oliveira, the Arte Lisboa 2010 - Contemporary Art Fair offers to the public in general and especially to art lovers, the chance to discover new works of art, in particular from portuguese artists, but also from other countries.

The Preview & Vernissage will take place on November 24 (18:00 - 23:00) and will be open to the general public between the 25 and the 28 (16:00 - 23:00).
