“Really, Really Like Me” - A children's book about accepting disabilities

Written by Gretchen Leary and illustrated by Dani Bowman, “Really, Really Like Me” is an interactive children's book that helps children to understand the differences and promote a healthy interaction between children with and without disabilities.

 Maybe with this book, children can start teaching adults on how to deal with differences and not to be afraid of them.
Afterall, if it weren't the differences between men and women, you wouldn't be reading this.

 Both Gretchen Leary and Dani (Danielle) Bowman are on the autism spectrum.

Michael Kountouris is the winner of the Worldpress Cartoon 2013

Greek artist Michael Kountouris was awarded the WPC Sintra 2013 Grand Prix during the ceremony that took place yesterday at the Centro Olga Cadaval, Sintra.
He won with his editoril cartoon «EU Rescue Team» published in «Efimerida Ton Syntanton» newspaper, from Athens.

 Born in Rhodes in 1960, the winner of the World Press Cartoon 2013 has been working as an editorial cartoonist in Greek newspapers since 1985 and has been cooperating with magazines.
Kountouris is also a children's books illustrator and regular member of the Athens Journalists Union since 1993 as well as founding member and secretary of the Greek Cartoonists Association.
During his career, he has been awarded several prizes and honourable mentions.

 First, second and third prizes, were attributed in each category, as well as several honourable mentions.

 In the Caricature category, the winners were: 1st Prize: «Evo Morales», by Pablo Lobato, from Argentina, published in the «Qué Pasa» newspaper from Santiago do Chile; 2nd Prize: «Mandela» by Jarbas Domingos, Brazil, published in «Diario de Pernambuco» newspaper from Recife, Brazil; 3rd Prize: «Messi» by Carbajo, Spain, published in «El Jueves» magazine from Barcelona.

 In the Gag Cartton category, the winners were: 1st Prize: «Low Economy», by Saeed Sadeghi, Iran, published in the «Jam-E-Jam» newspaper, from Tehran; 2nd Prize: «Who is...», by Robert Rousso, France, published in «Barricade», from Paris; 3rd Prize: «Free Warrior», by Raul Zuleta, Colombia, published in «El Mundo de Karry», from Lima, Peru.

 In the Editorial Cartoon category, the winners were: «EU Rescue Team» by Michael Kountouris, Greece, published in «Efimerida Ton Syntanton» newspaper, from Athens (winner of the World Press Cartoon 2013 Grand Prix); 2nd Prize: «Untitled» by Radulovic Spiro, Serbia, published in «Politika», from Belgrade; 3rd Prize: «USA greatest enemy», by Gregório de Holanda, Brazil, published in the «Diário de Pernambuco» newspaper, from Recife.

The works can be seen at the Centro Cultural Olga Cadaval, from April 13 through June 30, 2013.

Winners of the World Press Cartoon 2013 selected

The Jury of the World Press Cartoon Sintra 2013, consisted by Francisco Puñal, Spain, Ricardo Antunes, Brazil, António Antunes, Portugal, Riber Hansson, Sweden and Marielena Nardi, Italy (from left to right), has already selected the winners, who come from Argentina, Brazil, Colombia, France, Greece, Iran, Serbia and Spain.

 The award ceremony will take place the 12th of April at the Olga Cadaval Cultural Center, located in Sintra, Portugal.

"A Tea for Alice" - Temporary Exhibition at the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation

Base on Lewis Carroll's "Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland," the temporary exhibition "A Tea for Alice" (Um Chá para Alice) celebrates its main character through the notable artistic craftmanship and concept of 21 artists from 15 countries.

 Having the emblematic tea party with the Mad Hatter and the March Hare as the core them of the exhibition, "A Tea for Alice" features purpose-designed tables with different and distinct shapes and heights to form a type of mad lizard along whose back all the works are exhibited.

 Through ages, "Alice's Adventures in Wonderland" has inspired artists from all areas and has been translated into over a hundred different languages, making it one of the most universal and classical stories of all time. This temporary exhibition enables its visitors to perceive how thorugh their styles, schools and techniques all the whilst recognising the influence of cultures and discovering new interpretations, artists have conveyed their contemporary artistic view of the famous tea party.

 Close cooperation with Munich Library has also enabled the inclusion of a large number of old and modern editions of this work being made available for public consultation.
 Commissioned by Ju Godinho and Eduardo Filipe, and with the support of the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation, "A Tea for Alice" can be visited at the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation's Temporary Exhibitions venue (floor 01) until February 10, 2013 (closed on Mondays).

 The artists featured are Alain Gauthier, Lucie Laroche, Nicole Claveloux and Rebecca Dautrement (France), Anthony Browne, Helen Oxenbury and John Vernon Lord (United Kingdom), Chiara Carrer and Lisa Nanni (Italy), Anne Herbauts (Belgium), Dusan Kallay (Slovakia), Iban Barrenetxea (Spain), Joanna Concejo (Poland), Klaus Ensikat (Germany), Lisbeth Zwerger (Austria), Maggie Taylor (USA), Narges Mohammadi (Iran), Nelson Cruz (Brazil), Suzy Lee (South Korea), Teresa Lima (Portugal) and Vladimir Clavijo (Russia).

 The exhibition entitled "A Tea with Alice," was recently held at The Story Museum, receiving some positive accolades from experts and public.

World Press Cartoon 2012 winners: Egil Nyhus and Aristides Hernandez Guerrero

The Grand Prix of the 8th edition of the World Press Cartoon Sintra 2012, was attributed ex aequo to the Norwegian artist Egil Nyhus and to the Cuban artist Aristides Esteban Guerrero during the awards ceremony took place yesterday, April 20th, at the Olga Cadaval Cultural Center. Both will share a €20,000 cash award.

Egil, winner of the Caricature category, submited a portrait of the former FMI director Dominique Strauss-Khan, depicted as a piggy bank behind bars. The caricature was published on May 2011 in the Romenikes Blad newspaper.

Aristides aka Ares, winner of the Editorial Cartoon category, participated with a work published on October 2011 in the Juventud Rebelde newspaper, where an air bombing is represented with bombs in the form of Liberty statue torches.

In the Gag category, the first prize was awarded to the Romanian artist Pavel Constantin, who submited an image of a universal assembly with animals seating on top of nuclear waste barrels.

The second and third prizes in the Caricature category went respectively to Javier Carbajo Alfonso(Spain) and Riber Hansson(Sweden). David Vela(Spain) and  Goran Divac(Serbia) were attributed the second and third prizes in the Editorial Cartoon category, while Omar Turcios(Colombia) and Agim Sulaj(Albania) were awarded with the second and third prizes in the Gag category.

For the World Press Cartoon Sintra 2012, the organization received 861 cartoons submited by 402 participants from 56 countries. The juri, composed by António Antunes(Portugal), Fernando Puig Rosdo(Spain), Jean Mulatier(France), Lisa Donnelly(USA) and Peter Nieuwendijk(Netherlands), selected 343 works by 260 artists.

These works will be on display at the Museum of Modern Art in Sintra until July 30, 2012.

World Press Cartoon 2011 winners exhibition at Casino Lisboa

Between August 12 and September 1, Lisbon Casino (Casino Lisboa) art gallery shows the works by the winners of the World Press Cartoon 2011.

The public will have the chance to appreciate some of the best cartoons published worldwide in newspapers and magazines on caricature, editorial cartoon and gag categories.

Australian cartoonist David Rowe was the overall winner of the 7th edition of the World Press Cartoon, with the work "Wikileaks and Uncle Sam", published last December in "The Sun-Herald".

The Australian cartoonist David Rowe is the overall winner of the 7th edition of the World Press Cartoon , with the work "Wikileaks and Uncle Sam", published last December in "The Sun-Herald". Besides winning the Grand Prix, David was also awarded the first prize in the Editorial Cartoon category.

In the Gag Category, the Brazilian Samuca was awarded for his work about pedophilia in the Catholic Church, published in the "Diário de Pernambuco". Other renowned names that are participating in this saloon, whose works will be on view after April 9th together with those of selected artists, are Pawel Kuczynski from Poland who conquered the second place in the Editorial Cartoon category with "Made in China" and the Mexican Alecus, who portrayed the famous Chilean miners who got burried last year and managed to survive, in his work "Chilean Miners".

João Vaz de Carvalho, with a portrait of D. João I, and Santiagu, with a drawing of Mother Teresa of Calcuta, both from Portugal, were respectively awarded the first and third places in the Caricature category. The second place in Caricature was attributed to the Cuban cartoonist Ángel Boligán with a drawing of Julian Assange.

The awards ceremony took place this April 8th at the Centro Cultural Olga Cadaval in Sintra.

This year's edition received 822 drawings by 462 authors from several nationalities, of which 401 were selected during February. The selected cartoonists are from Albania, Australia, Brazil, Spain, Mexico, Poland and Portugal were selected during February.

The juri was composed by António Antunes, saloon Director and cartoonist at the Expresso newspaper, Ralph Steadman, an illustrator and cartoonist from Great-Britain, the Canadian artist and illustrator Anita Kunz, Alessandro Gatto, Italian painter, illustrator and graphic artist, and the Belgian cartoonist, illustrator and plasticine modeler Cecile Bertrand.

Considered one of the most important events of its genre worldwide, the World Press Cartoon Sintra 2011 can be visited at the Sintra Museu de Arte Moderna from April 9th to June 30th 2011, Mon-Sun, 10h00-18h00, including holidays. Admitance is free.
