Exhibition: Shortlisted Artists For the Future Generation Art Prize 2012

The works of the 20 shortlisted artists for the Future Generation Art Prize 2012, the first global art prize for artists up to 35, founded by the Victor Pinchuk Foundation in December 2009, can be viewed  in the PinchukArtCentre (Kyiv, Ukraine) untill January 6, 2013. These artists represent 16 different countries, selected from more than 4,000 applications received from 134 countries spread across all continents.
Also on view, is the work by 21st nominee for the Future Generation Art Prize, Mykyta Kadan, winner of the PinchukArtCentre Prize 2011, the first national contemporary art prize awarded to young Ukrainian artists under 35.

The shortlist of theFuture Generation Art Prize 2012 includes: Jonathas de Andrade, 30 (Brazil), Meris Angioletti, 34 (Italy), Marwa Arsanios, 33 (Lebanon), Micol Assael, 33 (Italy), Abigail DeVille, 30 (United States), Aurelien Froment, 35 (France), Mykyta Kadan,29 (Ukraine), Meiro Koizumi, 35 (Japan), Andre Komatsu, 33 (Brazil), Eva Kotatkova, 29 (Czech Republic), Tala Madani, 30 (Iran), Basim Magdy, 34 (Egypt), Ahmet Ogut, 30 (Turkey), Amalia Pica, 33 (Argentina), Agnieszka Polska, 27 (Poland), Emily Roysdon, 34 (United States), Rayyane Tabet, 28 (Lebanon), Yan Xing, 26 (China), Lynette Yiadom-Boakye, 34 (United Kingdom), and two groups: Joao Maria Gusmao + Pedro Paiva, 33, 34 (Portugal), and R.E.P. (Ukraine).
British artist Lynette Yiadom-Boakye was the Main Prize Winner of the 2012 edition of the Future Generation Art Prize. Lynette will receive a $100,000 award ($60,000 in cash and $40,000 to be invested in the production of new work).

Jonathas de Andrade (Brazil), Micol Assael (Italy), Ahmet Ögüt (Turkey), Rayyane Tabet (Lebanon), and Marwa Arsanios (Lebanon) shared the Special Prize.

Future Generation Art Prize 2012



Entries are open for those who wish to participate in the second edition of the Future Generation Art Prize, founded by the Victor Pinchuk Foundation.

The press conference took place last February 6 and counted with the presence of its founder and chairman of the board, the Ukrainian billionaire, philanthropist and art collector Viktor Pinchuk; Eckhard Schneider, General Director at the PinchukArtCentre; Richard Armstrong, Director of the Solomon R. Guggenheim Foundation; Nicholas Serota, Director of the Tate Museum; Damien Hirst and Jeff Koons, both Mentor Artists since the first edition of the Future Generation Art Prize; Cinthia Marcelle from Brazil, Winner of the Future Generation Art Prize 2010.

Open to all young artists worldwide aged between 18 and 35, this biennial Prize provides considerable means to permit the development of an artistic career for the winner, as well as supporting other selected participating artists.

The submission can be made either individually or in group as one participant, being possible for those who are part of a group to also enter individually, but only once for each.

All works of art, regardless of category and media will be accepted within the size limitations as outlined in the EntryForm. Obviously the artist should be keep his/her creativity within the bounderies of good sense and avoid submiting offensive works. It goes without saying that the submited art should be the artist's or group of artists own concept and creation.
The artist will be responsible for providing with due time, the necessary instructions regarding the eventual assembly of works and installation, two months before the opening of the Prize Exhibition but in any event not later than August 30, 2012.

The organizers of the Future Generation Art Prize 2012 will cover all costs of crating, for which the participant agrees to pass all dimensions and
specifications of the artwork(s), transportation and customs formalities when shipping artworks to/from Kiev for exhibition in accordance with separate agreements with the participant, as well as the insurance of the artwork(s) nail-to-nail according to the value given by the participant for the complete period of the loan. The artist will be responsible for providing all the required information for customs formalities and agrees to sign any relevant separate contracts required for customs clearance during transportation to the Prize Exhibition according to all applicable laws.

Submissions can be made online between 6 February and 6 May 2012, until 4:00 PM (CET).

A shortlist of twenty artists will be announced in June 2012 and the exhibition of their works will take place at the PinchukArtCentre between October 2012 and January 2013. These artists will participate by showing the existing artworks they highlighted in their applications and may, if agreed with the Organizers, also create new works specifically for the Prize Exhibition.

The winner of the national PinchukArtCentre Prize will also participate, bringing the
maximum number of artists in the Prize Exhibition to 21.

In December 2012, will take place the Future Generation Art Prize 2012 Award Ceremony, where the winning artist or collective artists will be awarded with a prize split into US$60,000 in cash and US$ 40,000 to invest in the production of new work.

The jury will also award up to five "Special Prizes" to support young talents. The
Special Prizes will not be bound to a financial award but rather serve above all to support the further development of the artists in the form of residences in different art contexts. At the Organizers sole discretion up to a total of US$ 20,000 can be invested for about five Special Prizes.

The Future Generation Art Prize was announced for the first time in December 2009 by Viktor Pinchuk at the Gramercy Park hotel in New York.

2011 Edition of ArtReview’s Power 100 is headed by Chinese artist Ai Weiwei

This month, Art Review has issued its tenth annual ranking of whom their editors consider to be the contemporary art world’s most powerful players. In their own words: "...a guide to the general trends, networks and forces that shape the artworld."

Chinese artist Ai Weiwei, who was detained and imprisoned by the Chinese authorities during 81 days earlier this year, comes first on Art Review’s Power 100. This choice results from the artist's art practice and activism, manifesting his artistic independence from the system.

Besides Weiwei, the 2011 Edition of ArtReview’s Power 100 includes a few artists, being Cindy Sherman, Takashi Murakami, Marina Abramovic and Anish Kapoor
, four of them.

Names such as Hans Ulrich Obrist & Julia Peyton-Jones, Glenn Lowry, Larry Gagosian, Nicholas Serota, David Zwirner, Klaus Biesenbach, Eli Broad, François Pinault, Patricia Phelps de Cisneros, Victor Pinchuk, Artangel, Creative Time, artists Anton Vidokle, Julieta Aranda & Brian Kuan Wood (all three from e-flux), Boris Groys and Kaja Silverman, are among the list of curators, museum directors,gallerists, art patrons, collectors, distribution agencies and thinkers who influence and dynamize the art world.

Yesterday took place at the Pinchuk Art Center in Kyiv, the award ceremony of the Future Generation Art Prize 2010.
Cinthia Marcelle from Brazil received the Main Prize. The Special Prize was attributed to the Romanian artist Mircea Nicolae.

Future Generation Art Prize Award Ceremony 2010

Established by the Viktor Pinchuk Foundation to support the work of emerging young artists worldwide, the Future Generation Art Prize is a biennial art award in the value of $100,000 ($60,000 in cash), of wich $40,000 must be used by the winning artist for the creation of new works.

Today in the Pinchuk Art Center in Kiev at 20h00 (GMT + 2h) will take place the Award Ceremony of the 21 shortlisted artists for the Future Generation Art Prize 2010, presented by Tim Marlow (Director of Exhibitions, White Cube, Great Britain) and Olga Freimut (TV presenter, Ukraine).

The Mentor Artists of the Prize, including Andreas Gursky, Damien Hirst, Jeff Koons, and Takashi Murakami, will arrive to Kyiv especially to attend the Award Ceremony.

Among the special guests will be the members of the International Board of the Future Generation Art Prize Richard Armstrong (Solomon R. Guggenheim Foundation and Museum); Alfred Pacquement (Musée nationale d’art moderne, Centre Georges Pompidou); Miuccia Prada (founder of Prada Foundation) and Sir Nicholas Serota (Tate, Great Britain).

The winner of the Main Prize will be selected and announced by the FAGP’s international jury consisting of Ai Weiwei (China), Daniel Birnbaum (Sweden) Eckhard Schneider (Germany), Ivo Mesquita (Brazil), Okwui Enwezor (Nigeria), Rober Storr (USA), and Yuko Hasegawa (Japan).
