2nd Annual Plein Air Convention and Expo (Monterey-Carmel 2013)
Being a painter is not only about being at home or in the studio in front of the easel. It's also connecting with fellow artists and sharing ideas, techniques and experiences.
The internet as in someway submited us to our homes and kept us from going out as often as we should. To meet new people and to revisit old friends. Just being online is not enough!
For those who practice it and maybe more even for those who don't but wish to, plein air painting, or outdoor painting if you prefer, is one of the best ways for artists to get in touch with other coleagues and with the public. What better way to market your art than showing yourself in full activity?
Plein air painting also enhances one's abillities as a painter and as a draughtsman, namely by making you rethink your painting strategies. You are not in the studio or in the comfort of your home You may even be attack by a bear! But don't let this deter you.
Presented by Plein Air Magazine, the 2nd Annual Plein Air Convention and Expo will be held in Monterey-Carmel on the California coast, from April 10-14, 2013 and will feature over 50 of the top plein air artists as well as several top figurative artists.
The Plein Air Convention will feature a main stage with live demos and presentations, as well as a second stage where participants willl be able to assist other demos. Participating artists and all those who have registered, will have the chance to assist all the events without having to sign-up and pay separately.
Artists are encouraged to bring their paint gear and enjoy the company of other coleagues while painting together. The organizers have invited dozens of artists to do outdoor demos on the three days going outdoors to paint around the Monterey-Carmel area.
The 2nd Annual Plein Air Convention and Expo will also include lectures and talks about painting techniques; lectures about historical artists and paintings; an expo hall with art suppliers offering new products and special offers. The full agenda can be consulted on this page.
The convention will be held at the Monterey Conference Center, with the Monterey Marriott as the host hotel. This hotel is sold out, however there are many rooms available in downtown Monterey.

The Academy of Reciprocal Enlightenment, Shanghai Biennale 2012 - Call for Applications
The Shanghai Biennale 2012 will occur under the theme Reactivation, interpretating among other aspects the social mobilization and structure of community, as well as the critical role of education.
With the purpose of offering a broad view upon these subjects, the curatorial team determined to include lectures, seminars and other communication events into the framework of a short-term training program that will take place this autumn.
The program is named “the Academy of Reciprocal Enlightenment”, as “Academy” refers to a Platonic-style community of wisdom and criticism. It embodies our educational philosophy: education is a self-governing action by learner communities, which serve as a platform of exchanges and dissemination of opinions.
Art Writer/Journalist Workshop; Curatorial Practice Workshop; IMMERSION - Art
Technology Workshops, are the three choices available for those who wish to participate in the program. Each workshop is explained in detail, together with the qualification and application requirements.
Although the Shanghai Biennale will grant tuition and accommodation to all of the selected participants for the entire course in Shanghai, these will be responsible for their round-trip airfares to and from Shanghai, visa fee and living expenses (meal and local car fare) during their stay.
Participants should read all the details about the workshops that they wish to frequent and contact the organizer in case of any doubt.
This can be a great opportunity to gain experience and advance your artistic career, especially when the East and Middle East are assuming an indubitable role in the art market and this program will give you a closer view about their perspective. You will also have the chance to share your ideas with others like you and learn from theirs.

How Art Can Help People With Disabilities
Proclaimed in 1992, the annual observance of the International Day of Disabled Persons takes place on the 3rd of Decemmber.
The theme for 2011 is “Together for a better world for all:
Including persons with disabilities in development.”
We live in a society where laws and benefits fall far behind the needs of disable people and their families, and in many countries those laws are constantly disrespected without any sanction. Moreover there's a gap in terms of educating people in their relation with each other, especially between the so-called normal and those with disabilities - People with disabilities make up an estimated 15 per cent of the world’s population. Almost one-fifth of the estimated global total of people living with disabilities, or between 110-190 million, encounter significant difficulties. Furthermore, a quarter of the global population is directly affected by disability, as care-givers or family members.
One of the most successful methods of providing disabled people with personal development and social integration is through the arts, especially in the case of children.
Art enables dexterity development, a better perception of space (including negative space and relation), colour, form and many other things. It is also a great opportunity to end individual isolation, as art projects can be completed in group.
Several resources for those working with special needs students in the arts, can be found online or by contacting official and private institutions.
Several art projects for children can be found at Julie Voigt's blog Art for Small Hands.

Heilbrunn Timeline of Art History
Extending from prehistory to the present day, the Metropolitan Museum of Art's Heilbrunn Timeline of Art History is a chronological, geographical, and thematic exploration of the history of art from around the world, as illustrated by the Museum's collection.
Since its start in 2000 that curators, conservators, and educators from the Metropolitan Museum continue to dedicate a great deal of their time researching and writing the Timeline, continuously developing its scope and complexity, reflecting the most up-to-date scholarship.
The Timeline of Art History is is indexed by chronology, geography, theme, and subject, encompassing four main categories:
World Maps and accompanying regional maps that can be used within a selected region or time period.
Timeline that includes a chart of time periods, representative works from the museum's collection and a historical overview that permits visitors to compare art from around the globe at any time in history.
Thematic Essays focusing on specific themes in art history, such as artistic movements and periods, archaeological sites, empires and civilizations, recurrent themes and concepts, media, and artists. Each thematic essay is complemented with links to related themes and timelines.
Works of Art are placed in a comprehensive chronological, geographical, and thematic context. Each image can be enlarged for closer scrutiny and is accompanied by supporting material, including when available, links to technical glossaries on CAMEO and artist biographies from Oxford Art Online.
A General Index providing a more direct search and a Bibliography comprised of over 3000 Metropolitan Museum of Art publications, complement this invaluable art resource.
