Frieze New York 2013 - Contemporary Art Fair

Designed by SO – IL architects and sponsored by Deutsche Bank, the second edition of Frieze New York, contemporary art fair, is being held at New York’s Randall’s Island Park until tomorow May 13, 2013.

Realized annually at Frieze New York and curated by Cecilia Alemani, this year's Frieze Projects program includes seven specially commissioned projects, for which five participating artists were invited to conceive site-specific works that either react to the exceptional location of Randall’s Island or engage with the experience of the fair.
The 2013 invited artists are: Andra Ursuta, Liz Glynn, Maria Loboda, Marianne Vitale and Mateo Tannatt.

The program also features a special tribute to legendary artist-run restaurant FOOD, originally conceived by Gordon Matta-Clark and Carol Goodden in 1971. With a menu that changes daily, the artists chefs at FOOD 1971/2013 are: Matthew Day Jackson, Carol Goodden, Tina Girouard and Jonathan Horowitz.

This year's Frieze Projects program includes a literary project entitled Frieze Story, this year with an original text by novelist Ben Marcus.
Interviews with all the commissioned artists, plus a special homage to FOOD as a continuing source of inspiration, appear in the Frieze New York Catalogue, which is available to purchase at the fair, and via frieze.com, and is priced: $39.95 / £24.95 / €30.77.

Visitors to the Art Fair will have the chance to appreciate the work of sculptors from around the world, including Paul McCarthy’s Balloon Dog (2013), an 80-foot-high inflatable work.
Fiona Connor, Style Guide Spa (2013); Saint Clair Cemin, Fotini (2013); Martha Friedman, Amygdalas (2013); and Nick Van Woert, Primitive (2013) are also among the artists exhibiting at the Sculpture Park, located along the waterfront of Randall’s Island and overlooking the East River
Also on show will be works by artists: Tom Burr, Tom Friedman, Andreas Lolis, Charles Long, Jason Meadows, Pae White and Franz West. The Sculpture Park at Frieze New York is selected by curator Tom Eccles.

Artists Charles Atlas and the New Humans, Trisha Baga and Haroon Mirza, were invited to create the three commissioned audio works for the second edition of Frieze Sounds, programmed and curated by Cecilia Alemani and presented with BMW. The sound works will be premiered in the BMW 7 Series cars that operate the VIP shuttle services from Randall’s Island.
Additionally, the works will be accessible at friezenewyork.com, available to download since May 10, 2013, and at a listening station within the fair.

Frieze Talks is a daily program of presentations, panel discussions and conversations with leading artists, writers and cultural commentators. Frieze Talks 2013 is programmed by editors of frieze Dan Fox (Co-Editor) and Sam Thorne (Associate Editor).
This year’s participants include: Douglas Crimp, Lydia Davis, Joan Jonas and John Maus.

Because education is an important part of our lives, this 2013 edition includes the Frieze New York Education, a space that enables public school classes and museum groups to further explore the fair through workshops.
psonsored by Deutsche Bank and held in a dedicated structure the program is devised by Free Arts NYC and 826NYC who together produce a dynamic context for students ranging from 4th–12th grade to explore notions of contemporary art and color. The guide and space centers around color theory and contemporary art. A creative documentation of the workshops will be made via a Frieze Education tumblr page.

Gary Hattem, President of the Deutsche Bank Americas Foundation, said of the Education program: ‘This new educational component is a chance for children to interact with art from around the world in their own backyard.’

The 2013 edition of Frieze New York includes a selection of over 180 of the world’s leading contemporary art galleries. A strong contingent of US galleries is particularly in evidence, with 55 participating galleries from the fair’s host city. Galleries from the following 32 countries will show at Frieze New York 2013: Argentina, Australia, Austria, Belgium, Brazil, Canada, China, Colombia, Denmark, France, Germany, Greece, India, Ireland, Israel, Italy, Japan, Korea, Lebanon, New Zealand, Norway, Poland, Romania, Russia, South Africa, Spain, Switzerland, The Netherlands, Turkey, UAE, UK and USA.

Emerging galleries will be participating in the Focus and Frame sections of the fair. Focus is for galleries less than ten years old debuting works previously unseen in an art-fair context.
Focus galleries will show curated projects or solo stands conceived for Frieze New York. Frame is a section dedicated to galleries established less than six years ago and, this year, is supported by Joe Fresh. The Frame galleries selection is made on the basis of a proposed solo presentation and has been advised by curators Rodrigo Moura and Tim Saltarelli.

A Stand Prize in the value of $15,000, was presented on Thursday 9 May to the most innovative gallery stand at the fair. The award was sponsored by Champagne Pommery and judged by an international panel of curators: Juan A. Gaitán (Curator 8th Berlin Biennale); Naomi Beckwith (Marilyn and Larry Fields Curator, MCA Chicago); Jeffrey Grove (The Hoffman Family Senior Curator of Contemporary Art, Dallas Museum of Art).

Tickets to Frieze New York 2013 are on sale for $26 and can be bought online friezenewyork.com/visitors/tickets. Please note: to ensure the best experience for all visitors, tickets are limited and only available in advance.

2nd Annual Plein Air Convention and Expo (Monterey-Carmel 2013)

Being a painter is not only about being at home or in the studio in front of the easel. It's also connecting with fellow artists and sharing ideas, techniques and experiences.
The internet as in someway submited us to our homes and kept us from going out as often as we should. To meet new people and to revisit old friends. Just being online is not enough!

For those who practice it and maybe more even for those who don't but wish to, plein air painting, or outdoor painting if you prefer, is one of the best ways for artists to get in touch with other coleagues and with the public. What better way to market your art than showing yourself in full activity?
Plein air painting also enhances one's abillities as a painter and as a draughtsman, namely by making you rethink your painting strategies. You are not in the studio or in the comfort of your home You may even be attack by a bear! But don't let this deter you.

Presented by Plein Air Magazine, the 2nd Annual Plein Air Convention and Expo will be held in Monterey-Carmel on the California coast, from April 10-14, 2013 and will feature over 50 of the top plein air artists as well as several top figurative artists.

The Plein Air Convention will feature a main stage with live demos and presentations, as well as a second stage where participants willl be able to assist other demos. Participating artists and all those who have registered, will have the chance to assist all the events without having to sign-up and pay separately.
Artists are encouraged to bring their paint gear and enjoy the company of other coleagues while painting together. The organizers have invited dozens of artists to do outdoor demos on the three days going outdoors to paint around the Monterey-Carmel area.

The 2nd Annual Plein Air Convention and Expo will also include lectures and talks about painting techniques; lectures about historical artists and paintings; an expo hall with art suppliers offering new products and special offers. The full agenda can be consulted on this page.

The convention will be held at the Monterey Conference Center, with the Monterey Marriott as the host hotel. This hotel is sold out, however there are many rooms available in downtown Monterey.

The Academy of Reciprocal Enlightenment, Shanghai Biennale 2012 - Call for Applications

The Shanghai Biennale 2012 will occur under the theme Reactivation, interpretating among other aspects the social mobilization and structure of community, as well as  the critical role of education.

With the purpose of offering a broad view upon these subjects, the curatorial team determined to include lectures, seminars and other communication events into the framework of a short-term training program that will take place this autumn.

The program is named “the Academy of Reciprocal Enlightenment”, as “Academy” refers to a Platonic-style community of wisdom and criticism. It embodies our educational philosophy: education is a self-governing action by learner communities, which serve as a platform of exchanges and dissemination of opinions.

Art Writer/Journalist Workshop; Curatorial Practice Workshop; IMMERSION - Art

Technology Workshops, are the three choices available for those who wish to participate in the program. Each workshop is explained in detail, together with the qualification and application requirements.

Although the Shanghai Biennale will grant tuition and accommodation to all of the selected participants for the entire course in Shanghai, these will be responsible for their round-trip airfares to and from Shanghai, visa fee and living expenses (meal and local car fare) during their stay.

Participants should read all the details about the workshops that they wish to frequent and contact the organizer in case of any doubt.

This can be a great opportunity to gain experience and advance your artistic career, especially when the East and Middle East are assuming an indubitable role in the art market and this program will give you a closer view about their perspective. You will also have the chance to share your ideas with others like you and learn from theirs.

Call for Applications: The 4th Gwangju Biennale International Curator Course

Since its inception in 2009, the Gwangju Biennale International Curator Course has been aknowledged as  platform for open discussions on curatorial practices and theoretical discourses of contemporary art and the biennales’ strategic and aesthetic approaches.

In 2012, the 4th edition will present "Biennale as Social Media" as its principal subject. Recurring to workshops, discussions, lectures by the visiting professor and group study, participants will be given an understanding of what is or what can be considered a biennale in today's art world.
Visits to museums, galleries, and artists’ studios in Gwangju and Seoul will also be scheduled.

Special lectures will be led by the 9th Gwangju Biennale Co-Artistic Directors and the 5th Gwangju Design Biennale Artistic Director. Several renowned professionals will be invited as guest lecturers to discuss their vast experience in the field.

The number of biennales has multiplied since the 1990s  and although some are regarded as a reference by artists and galleries, others have emerged that may be considered as no more than blockbusters.
How the role of a biennale as a catalyst of emerging artists or the affirmation of seasoned ones, or its role as an incubator for experimental art practices and freedom of expression has evolved during these years, as well as it comunicates with the public as a form of cultural practice, are some of the topics on which lecturers and participants will focus.

Course participants will take part in the preparation of the 2012 Gwangju Biennale under the supervision of the Biennale’s co-artistic directors. The participants are asked to make a group presentation during the final week.

This course is designed to provide young curators with opportunities to receive in-depth training. Thus the age restriction has been set to 35 and under. The Gwangju Biennale will grant tuition and accommodations to all of the selected participants for the entire course in Gwangju, South Korea. Participants will be responsible for their round-trip airfares to and from Gwangju and living expenses during their stay.
The entire course will be conducted in English and will take place between August 13 and September 8, 2012.

How Art Can Help People With Disabilities

Proclaimed in 1992, the annual observance of the International Day of Disabled Persons takes place on the 3rd of Decemmber.
The theme for 2011 is “Together for a better world for all:
Including persons with disabilities in development
.”

We live in a society where laws and benefits fall far behind the needs of disable people and their families, and in many countries those laws are constantly disrespected without any sanction. Moreover there's a gap in terms of educating people in their relation with each other, especially between the so-called normal and those with disabilities - People with disabilities make up an estimated 15 per cent of the world’s population. Almost one-fifth of the estimated global total of people living with disabilities, or between 110-190 million, encounter significant difficulties. Furthermore, a quarter of the global population is directly affected by disability, as care-givers or family members.

One of the most successful methods of providing disabled people with personal development and social integration is through the arts, especially in the case of children.
Art enables dexterity development, a better perception of space (including negative space and relation), colour, form and many other things. It is also a great opportunity to end individual isolation, as art projects can be completed in group.
Several resources for those working with special needs students in the arts, can be found online or by contacting official and private institutions.

Several art projects for children can be found at Julie Voigt's blog Art for Small Hands.

Curatorial Studies Residency at Node Center Berlin

The Node Center Berlin, has announced The Curatorial Studies Residency Program for 2011, designed for emerging curators who may wish to expand their professional practice in Berlin.

Under the theme “The logic of the limit: transversal curatorial processes”, residents will develop specific theoretical-practical research, exploring curatorial practices that expand their own mechanisms beyond the normal “taxonomic” processes of the art exhibition (i.e., classification, study, and exhibition), generating new discursive possibilities.
Students are expected to take an active role in organizing the program (i.e., managing seminars, workshops, guest lectures, exhibitions, etc.).

Perceiving curatorship as exhibition praxis, this intensive twelve weeklong program will offer direct experimentation with the exhibition methods and processes, and will be complemented with activities such as workshops, seminars, meetings with cultural agents, art shows, and visits to exhibition spaces.

Applicants must hold an academic background in any of the following areas of contemporary art: curatorial studies, theory and philosophy of art, art history, art management, and/or art production; visual arts, fine arts, arts and new media; or equivalent work experience within an Institution, or with projects developed as an independent curator.

The application form must be submited by July 20th 2011, after which an online interview will take place with each applicant.
Tuition fees are as follow: one deposit of €670 by August 16th, and three monthly payments of €750.

English will be used as the working language in The Curatorial Studies Residency at Node Center Berlin, taking place from September 20th to December 16th, 2011.

Weekend With the Masters Workshop & Conference 2011 (Monterey, California)

Now in its third year, Weekend With the Masters is an internationally renowned art event that offers an enlightening experience through contact with some of the most famous fine artists worldwide.

Presented by the American Artist magazine, this year's edition will take place in the Portola Hotel & Spa at Monterey Bay, California (September 7 through 10, 2011).

During the official four days of the event - Sunday is considered an extra day - several workshops and demonstrations will provide instruction on art techniques approaches to certain themes and subjects. Lectures and panel discussions conducted by the masters themselves will give you insightful ideas for your next art project and even for your artistic career.

A series of special and evening events will take place, starting on Wednesday, September 7, where after the opening reception ((6:30PM-9:30PM), David A. Leffel will kickoff the first official night of Weekend With the Masters by moderating a panel discussion titled “The Objectivity & Subjectivity of Art: Is Beauty Really in the Eye of the Beholder?”
His panelists include Richard Schmid, Jacob Collins, Rose Frantzen, George Gallo, Daniel Gerhartz, Quang Ho, and a curator from the de Young Museum, in San Francisco.

On September 8, the notable painter and instructor Richard Schmid, keynote speaker at Weekend With the Masters, will conduct a live portrait demonstration of Los Angeles artist Alexey Steele, at the same time engaging in conversation about various topics related to the current and future state of representational art.

Attendants will not want to miss the event on Friday evening, September 9, when Quang Ho and Daniel Sprick will carry a side-by-side painting demonstration of the same model, where both artists will show how they convey their particula interpretion of the same model and depict it using their techniques and artistic approaches, both realistic but different, either resulting in a more expressionistic result or in a tightly controlled contemporary realism influenced by an Old Master-like technique.

On Semptember 10, a special fund-raising silent auction that will include drawings, paintings, DVDs, books, and art materials donated by master instructors, local organizations, and event sponsors—will be donated to the California Art Club’s Mentor Program, which provides opportunities for artist-members under the age of 30 to connect with and learn from their signature members.

Although Weekend With the Masters officially ends on Saturday, September 10, participants will have the opportunity on Sunday (9AM-12PM) to have a painting they created during the event critiqued by one of the instructors and receive individualized feedback.

Art Day at The Overland Inn Museum with Live Models in Victorian and Edwardian Clothing

Located in McCutchenville, Ohio, the once McCutchen Inn was built in 1829 by Col. Joseph McCutchen with the purpose of serving as a stagecoach stop on the Harrison Trail, a formerly Indian Trail that extended from the Scioto River at Columbus, Ohio and continued north to Lake Erie, later expanded by General Henry Harrison to accommodate his troops during the War of 1812

After serving as a hotel and an apartment building, the Inn was acquired in a state of deterioration by the Wyandot County Historical Society in 1964.

Three years volunteer work from the community transformed the building into a museum dedicated to stagecoach, where visitors can delight in the quaint structure furnished with antiques donated by residents of Wyandot County and sorrounding ones, as well has having a glimpse of the nineteenth century travel throughout Ohio and America.
To enhance the experience, the reception and bar room where travelers registered to spend the night is still original.

With the financial support from current and former Wyandot County residents, businesses and organizations, including money collected by McCutchenville school children, and help from volunteer workers, The Overland Inn Museum went through a major renovation that started in 2002 and stretched out over a four-year period.

On June 10, 2007, more than 500 people traveled to McCutchenville, Ohio, for the grand reopening of the Inn.

Now thanks to an idea conceived by the museum's curator Janet Engle, The Overland Inn Museum will hold on Saturday, September 24, 2011 (10h00 am - 12h00 pm) a drawing and photography session.

Entitled Art Inn-spiration, it will feature live models dressed in Victorian and Edwardian clothing and still life arrangements from the museum’s collection, all in period surrounding.

Participants will be able to sketch with dry media and photograph as much as they wish.

The vacancies are limited and the registration form must be sent by September 12, 2011.
A small fee of $5 applies.

An exhibition of the works completed by the participants will be held next year at a date yet to announce.

The Overland Inn Museum boasts an impressive collection of textiles, including weavings, embroideries, laces, and quilts from the 19th and early 20th centuries.
It also provides workshops that offer its visitors the chance to travel to the pass and experience the American culture and life of their ancesters.
