Made in Hollywood - Photos from the John Kobal Foundation

Conceived by the Santa Barbara Museum of Art (US), "Made in Hollywood" shows the original photos by some of the most prominent photographers of the Hollywood studios between 1920 and 1960, such as George Hurrell, Clarence Sinclair Bull, Laszlo Willinger, Ernest Bachrach, A.L."Whitey" Schaefer, Bob Coburn, William Walling, E.R. Richee and Scotty Welbourne.

 The 93 photos belonging to the John Kobal Foundation and in exhibition at the Centro Cultural de Cascais, portray some of the most famous movie stars and symbols of the Hollywood studios golden era. Some of the names include Buster Keaton, Elizabeth Taylor, Gary Cooper, Gloria Swanson, Greta Garbo,Humphrey Bogart, James Dean, Marlon Brando, Marylin Monroe and Rita Hayworth.

 Parallel activities will take place during the time of the exhibition, including a film programme in the movie hall Dr. Félix Ribeiro at the Cinemateca Portuguesa:

 The exhibition "Made in Hollywood - Fotografias da Fundação John Kobal" is presented in Portugal by the Fundação D. Luis I, with the collaboration of the City Hall of Cascais, and can be visited free of charge at the Centro Cultural de Cascais until September 1, 2013 (Tuesday - Sunday; 10h00 - 18h00).

 Besides his participation at the Cinemateca Portuguesa, Simon Croker will also be at the exhibition on the same day at 15h00, for a guided visit. An event that the public will not want to miss.

Un Univers Intime - Paintings in the Frits Lugt Collection

The full scope of the Frits Lugt Collection - Fondation Custodia will be on dsplay for the first time at the Institut Néerlandais in Paris.

Expanded in the last two years, including an acquisition of nearly 60 oil sketches on paper from the bequest of Carlos van Hasselt (1929-2009), former director of the Fondation Custodia, the exhibition brings to the public a wealthy selection of 115 paintings, including masterpieces of the Dutch Golden Age, together with Flemish, Italian, French and Danish paintings, from a collection created gradually, with great passion and discernment, over nearly a century.

Recognized by its the Dutch Golden Age paintings that included works from Nicolaes Berchem (1620-1683), Jan van Ravesteyn (c. 1572-1657), Jan Lievens (1607-1674), Hendrick Avercamp (1585-1634), Ambrosius Bosschaert the Younger (1609-1645), Nicolaes Maes (1634–1693 (buried)) and Jacob Vrel(active around 1654-1670), the Frits Lugt Collection spans a range of famous works by renowned artists such as the British Richard Parkes Bonington (1802-1828); Martinus Christian W. Rørbye (1803-1848), Johan Thomas Lundbye (1818-1848) and Vilhelm Kyhn (1819-1903) from Danmark; Jacques Linard (around 1600-1645) and Nicolas de Largillière (1656-1746)from France; and the Italian painters Francesco Guardi (1712-1792), Cristoforo Munari (1667-1720), Francesco Guardi (1712-1792) and the famous female artist Sophonisba Anguissola (around 1535-1625).

Visitors will also have the opportunity to view works from the Silver Age, as historians call the Dutch 18th century, that include landscapes and city views by artists such as Jan ten Compe (1713-1761) and Hendrik Pothoven (1725/28-1807), as well as works of the 19th century from Josephus Augustus Knip (1777-1847, (1844-1910) and Jozef Israëls (1824-1911), the last two protagonists of the Hague School caracterized by Dutch landscapes and interiors.
A reference must be made to George Hendrik Breitner (1857-1923), first affiliated to the Hague School, later settled in Amsterdam.
A painter and photographer, friend of Van Gogh, Breitner is one of the major Dutch artists at the close of the 19th century and certainly the most gifted.

The Flemish artists are well repesented through the Brueghel dynasty with works from Jan Brueghel the Elder, often known as the “Velvet” Brueghel (1568-1625) and Jan van Kessel the Elder (1626-1679), grandson of the “Velvet“ Brueghe, in a total of 25 paintings including from David Teniers the Younger (1610-1690) and Pieter Lastman (1583 - 4 April 1633 (buried))

Also included and on display for the first time, are the recently acquired works from Eugène Isabey (1804-1886) and Achille Etna Michallon (1796-1822), the teacher of Corot.

In the last year and a half a great deal of attention has been devoted to the condition of the paintings in the collection and many of the works in exhibition as well as frames were cleaned and restored when necessary, which besides reassuring that the majority of the paintings are very well preserved, it also revealed a lot of information about technique.

Applications are open for 3rd Edition of the INOV-ART internship programme

The 3rd edition of INOV-ART will award 150 scholarships for the completion of international professional internships in the following areas and respective number of vacancies: Architecture and Urbanism (17); Performing Arts (22); Visual Arts (17); Cinema and
Audiovisual (22); Design (17); Writing and Editing (8); Management, Creative Industries and
Marketing (15); New Media (12); Heritage (8); Educational Services (12);

INOV-ART is intended for young people between 18 and 30 years old who have been residing in Portugal for over 1 year by the time they apply, who are unemployed, looking for their first job or for a new job. The candidates must possess proven qualifications in the fields of the arts and culture that they are applying to, attested by a higher education diploma, or a specialised artistic education certificate and proven experience.

Joint applications resulting from a prior agreement established between candidates and placement organisations may be submited.

Internships are expected to last between three and six months, with abroad ones being carried out between July and December 2011. The selected candidates will receive financial support, health insurance during the period of internship abroad (when applicable) and personal accident insurance covering all seminar days, the internship abroad and days spent travelling.

The deadline for applying to the 3rd edition of INOV-ART is April 15, 2011 (at 16:59:59h local time in mainland Portugal).

INOV-ART is an initiative of the Ministry of Culture, fostered, managed and executed by DGArtes and funded by Instituto do Emprego e Formação Profissional, I.P. with the aim of professionalization and specialization of young people in the fields of the arts and culture through the completion of professional internships at renowned organisations (“professional internship” is understood to mean the development of activities supervised by and internship coordinator which do not focus primarily on academic research, teaching, studying, nor individual projects that are not part of the activity of the placement organisation).

Designs Unveiled for The Broad Museum

The designs of The Broad Art Foundation (The Broad), a contemporary art museum to be built on Grand Avenue in downtown Los Angeles, were revealed by philanthropists Eli and Edythe Broad and architect Elizabeth Diller.
Dubbed “the veil and the vault,” and designed by world-renowned architects Diller Scofidio + Renfro, the three-story museum will feature a unique porous honeycomb “veil” that wraps the building and is visible through an expansive, top floor sky-lit gallery that will be home to great works of contemporary art drawn from the 2,000-piece Broad Collections assembled over the past 40 years.

The 120,000-square-foot project will feature almost an acre of column-free gallery space, a lecture hall for up to 200 people, a ground floor multimedia gallery, a public lobby with display space and a museum shop. Also to be included is a state-of-the-art archive, with study and art storage space that will be available to scholars and curators who want to research works in the collection and borrow artworks for their institutions through The Broad Art Foundation.
The public entry to the museum will complement the landscaped plaza to the south that is part of the Grand Avenue Project’s master plan. Its lobby will include a bookshop and espresso bar. Visitors will then journey upwards via an escalator, tunneling through the archive, arriving onto 40,000 square feet of column-free exhibition space bathed in diffuse light.
Presenting a 24-foot-high space, the area will be fully adaptable according to the curatorial needs.
The exhibition exit will be made through a winding stair through the vault, offering behind-the-scenes glimpses into the vast holdings of the Broad Collections and the foundation’s lending library operations, leading visitors back to the lobby.

With its construction predicted to begin in late summer and to be completed in two years, The Broad's inaugural exhibition will feature 200 of the most iconic works from the Broad Collections, including many recent additions to the collection and works never seen before in Los Angeles.
The exhibition show the artworks of Doug Aitken, El Anatsui, John Baldessari, Jean Michel Basquiat, Mark Bradford, Joseph Beuys, Chuck Close, Marlene Dumas, Sam Francis, Ellen Gallagher, Mark Grotjahn, Keith Haring, Jenny Holzer, Jasper Johns, Jeff Koons, Barbara Kruger, Glenn Ligon, Sharon Lockhart, Takashi Murakami, Shirin Neshat, Cady Noland, Lari Pittman, Neo Rauch, Robert Rauschenberg, Charles Ray, Ed Ruscha, Cindy Sherman, Thomas Struth, Robert Therrien, Cy Twombly, Kara Walker, Andy Warhol and Christopher Wool, among many others.

For three years after the inaugural exhibition, The Broad will feature rotating exhibitions every four months, focusing on artists represented in distinctive depth in the collection, such as Jean-Michel Basquiat, Andreas Gursky, Damien Hirst, Anselm Kiefer, Jeff Koons, Jasper Johns, Robert Rauschenberg, Roy Lichtenstein, Cindy Sherman, Cy Twombly, Andy Warhol and Christopher Wool.
During exhibitions, curators will be able to include lent works that will enhance the exhibition's theme, the perspetive about the artist, etc.
